Newham Archers impress at the 2007 CLAA indoor competition

Apart from the usual suspects Sean, Trevor, Sue, Daniel and Norman, this years CLAA indoor competition allowed up and coming stars Niall and Martyn to shine through as they racked up impressive scores at their first attempt. If Nial coming home in an impressive 8th place made heads turn, then novice Martyn romping home in 2nd place made the club's hardened professionals start looking over their shoulders. Also competing for the first time on barebow, Len easily took 1st prize. The Gents recurve team took 2nd prize in the team competition, seasoned campaigner Ted came in 2nd place for the longbow, but the day belonged to Newham Juniors.

In Junior Boy, Novice Junior Boy and Girl, Newham took first prize, with Nakul, Scott and Ifrah taking the respective honours. Their tally, together with Lee and Jamie's efforts ensured Newham took a clean sweep with Junior Recurve Team taking 1st place. And for the junior bare bow competition, well it had to be a Newham archer and Awais made sure we got that one as well.

He didn't win an individual medal, but club Chairman Trevor Harvey couldn't have been more pleased with the results.

Newham Archers host our first Inter Club tournament

After much planning, Newham Archers organised our first inter club tournament. Our initial visitors were our new friends from Bromley Archers. The weather conditions were perfect for a round of National, Short National and Short Junior National. Despite the best efforts of the club organiser, due to other engagements we were only able to muster some 13 archers to represent the club. Bromley arrived with some 30 archers! Things weren't looking for Newham

It was decided that we should take the aggregate scores of the best three adult scores, together with the highest score from the Junior round, add them together, and thus declare a winner. Step forward Newham stalwarts Sue, Norman, Sean and Jamie!

Whilst we fooled our opponents into a false sense of security with good east end hospitality, (copious amounts of tea, coffee, biscuits and muffins the size of grapefruits) we over come our lack of number by beating Bromley in the team event by a margin of some 25 points!

The result? Newham retained the Newham Pot, a trophy that is fast becoming something of a sporting icon in the corridors of east London archery! Remember, you read it here first. If the pot ever gets stolen, like the Jules Rimmet cup, and turns up years later by some boy walking a dog, you will know exactly where you were when you see the item on the news.

On a serious note, Bromley were great competitors and we are grateful for them for coming and making the afternoon so enjoyable. Hats off to them!

Newham Archers welcome the Hadzabe

Non-governmental officers, representing the Hadzabe people of Tanzania, took time out from their busy schedule of focus groups and debates at the University of East London to visit us.

The Hadzabe, a small but ancient group of hunter-gatherers who live near Lake Eyasi in northwestern Tanzania, south of the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti and are one of the few remnant cultures that still use the "click" language. Hadzabe men are excellent bow hunters, utilizing giraffe tendons and strong poison. They are a simple people, living primarily off of roots, fruits, and the bounty of hunting baboons, antelope and gazelle. However their lifestyle is rapidly changing due to numerous ecological and economic pressures.

Swapping poison arrows for club equipment, our guests' quickly showed themselves to be no strangers to modern archery gear, and set about introducing our club members to an unorthodox but highly effective archery target session.

Club president Trevor Harvey welcoming the group, together with lecturers from UEL reminded those present that whilst the sport of archery continues to grow in popularity in the 21st century, it has always been a required skill for both hunters and warriors alike from many different cultures over many centuries. The evening was part of several planned events for us over the coming weeks for Newham Archers at our new winter location, Langdon High School Sports Centre.

For the Hadzabe people, their plight to live side by side with modern farming and government policy continues, but they do so knowing they have made new friends in a small part of East London!

A memorable evening with the charity Sportability

One of the final events this summer was to welcome a group of physically disabled 15 to 20 year olds from Greenwich participating in a summer activity programme put together by Sportability.

The evening with with us was a first for both Newham Archers, and Sportability, and every one enjoyed the experience. Sportability's chief executive, David Heard, said" We were given a warm welcome and I was particularly impressed by the 'can-do' attitude of the Newham instructors. It instilled a lot of confidence in the group and they will take this away with them in their day to day living. It is all about looking at abilities rather than dis-abilities and the Newham team made this happen."

Sportability is now hoping to feature archery with Newham Archers as part of an ongoing programme for people with disabilities in the local area.
